How CBD Oil Is Made
Not all CBD is made equal, and how your CBD oil is made is important! At cannajoy, we make it a point to create CBD oil that is entirely natural, organic, and free of chemicals…but not all CBD brands can say the same. Today, we’ll be looking at some of the different ways CBD oil is made, plus, what exactly it is!
What Exactly Is CBD Oil?
CBD oil describes the extracted cannabinoids found in cannabis that are suspended in a tincture or oil. Hemp is naturally high in oils, and when processed, creates an oil high in the cannabinoid cannabidiol, also called CBD. Hemp CBD oil is a great way of obtaining the benefits of cannabis, and may also contain various vitamins, minerals, and other healthy substances like omega fatty acids depending on if hemp oil seeds are processed with it as well. CBD is known for its medicinal properties, and has been used in clinical trials, applied as a treatment, and transformed into pharmaceutical options in the past four decades. In recent years, CBD oil has become more mainstream. Due to its legality in all 50 states, assuming it has less than 0.3% THC, CBD oil can be used by anyone as a way to boost their overall health or mitigate the symptoms of their physical problems.
Different Processes for Making CBD Oil
There are a few different ways to extract cannabidiol from its plant matter. Each has its own benefits, whether it be that the method is cheaper, safer, or healthier. While they differ, the process is the same at its core: solvent is pushed through ground plant matter, and carries CBD away from plant matter into a collecting container.
Steam distillation is when water is boiled to become pressurized vapor, which then travels through plant material into a condenser. From there, the condensed water and essential cannabidiol oils mixture drips into a collecting flask, which will later be distilled to create pure CBD oil.
Solvent extraction utilizes hydrocarbons or natural solvents such as petroleum, butane, or propane. The setup is similar to steam distillation, but uses solvents instead of water. Similarly, the solvents are later evaporated off. While these substances generally evaporate with ease, studies have found trace amounts of hydrocarbon toxic residue in CBD products made through this manner, which is certainly not good for your health.
Carbon dioxide is another way to extract oil from plant matter, and is seen as a cleaner, purer, and safer method of extraction. Supercritical carbon dioxide — a form of CO2 that contains properties of both a liquid and gas — is forced through ground plant material, just like with liquid chemical solvents, in order to pull the desired compounds out.
