Hemp Oil: Does It Get You High?
Many people have hesitancies with jumping into the world of hemp oil out of fears that it will get them “high.” But, does hemp oil even possess the ability to do so? The short answer is, no, hemp oil will not get you high! Cannabinoids, including compounds THC and hemp oil, do not affect the vital functions of the brain. Because of this, you’ll never have to worry about overdosing on either of them. With that said, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can certainly be inhibiting due to its intoxicating properties.
What Are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoid is a term that refers to one of the 113 currently-discovered compounds found in cannabis plants. This family of chemical substances includes THC, which is psychoactive, CBD, which is not, plus many others. Within any form of Cannabis, THC and CBD are found most abundantly, though sometimes more one than the other.
Where Does Hemp Oil Come From?
Cannabis plants come in a few strains, including indicas and sativas. Hemp and marijuana are both derived from a Cannabis sativa strain. Hemp, however, has historically been grown for more useful purposes, like making textile goods. Hemp is naturally higher in CBD and has nearly no THC, which is why we derive our non-psychoactive hemp oil from it. Our Hemp 101 page features more information about the origins of hemp oil.
How Does Hemp Oil Work?
Hemp oil works by entering the body and attaching to parts of the endocannabinoid system. Your endocannabinoid system works as a homeostatic control center, running the functions that keep you alive, well, and balanced day-in and day-out. Our bodies make our own chemicals that work within this system, called endogenous cannabinoids. However, these endogenous cannabinoids are really just neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow the body to “talk” to itself, communicating different things through chemicals like anandamide, 2-AG, NADA, and OAE.
Sometimes, our bodies lack the necessary components to produce sufficient neurotransmitters, and our bodies will find it harder to communicate with themselves. In situations like these, hemp oil can be extremely beneficial, supplementing the endocannabinoid system with ways to “talk.”
Within the system are receptors, ligands, and enzymes – and hemp oil can affect all of them. Doing so goes on to impact thought, memory, mood, appetite, and even pain perception. Moreover, hemp oil seems to only impact things positively! It functions as an antioxidant, works as an anti-inflammatory agent, and is medically proven to treat certain diseases and disorders.
Technically speaking, any compound that affects the brain is “psychoactive,” and hemp oil’s impact on things like thought, memory, and mood do make it one. However, hemp oil does not cause an intoxicating psychoactive effect the way THC does. In fact, hemp oil actually inhibits the negative effects of THC, or at least balances them, if you personally decide to take both together.
