How CBD Oil Can Help Treat Seizures
Hemp CBD is known for its many medicinal properties. Surprising to most is that hemp-derived cannabidiol came into the limelight thanks to its incredible effects on patients suffering from seizures. In fact, CBD oil’s impact on seizure disorders is one of the first researched and recorded. Let’s learn more!
Is CBD Oil FDA Approved?
In December of 2018, the United States 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law. This legendary piece of legislation removed hemp from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. There were conditions: hemp was defined as Cannabis sativa L. as well as derivatives with no more than 0.3% delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by dry weight. In doing so, it moved hemp over to FDA authority, meaning that hemp-derived substances had to meet any relevant FDA requirements and/or standards just like any other regulated product. As of June 25th, 2018, a singular CBD formula has been approved by the FDA for pharmaceutical use, called Epidiolex.
What is Epidiolex?
Epidiolex is a purified CBD oil extract produced by Greenwich Biosciences. It’s over 98% oil-based, making an extremely potent version of cannabidiol. Epidiolex is used for the treatment of rare, severe, pediatric seizure diseases, which we touch on below. CBD oil had been used non-clinically by patients, often administered in trials or by parents, for quite some time before 2018. Therefore, officiating the status of Epidiolex as a pharmacological option was a monumental ruling to these patients and their families.
What Research Backs up CBD Oil for Seizures?
Dr. Mechoulam was a doctor on the frontier of CBD use. He originally discovered the stereochemistry of CBD and THC, finally connecting that the two were different — and only THC was intoxicating. Seeing potential in this knowledge, Dr. Mechoulam actually performed a study in the 1980s to test the efficacy of CBD on epileptic patients. After giving just eight people 300mg of CBD daily, half of the patients had a significantly reduced number of seizures, and the other half had no seizures at all. It can almost be said that CBD’s success in this trial is what led to its potential as a treatment for many disorders in general.
Since then, many trials have been conducted to approve CBD oil for those with seizures by top institutions. On-going trials are now analyzing the efficacy of Epidiolex and similar cannabidiol treatments for those with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, which also results in forms of epilepsy.
What Seizures Does CBD Oil Help Treat?
CBD in the form of the FDA-approved drug Epidiolex is used to treat certain patients with rare seizure disorders, namely Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome. These disorders can be devastating to a patient’s quality of life, especially because the onset of symptoms begins in early childhood if not infancy. CBD oil is more often used as a last resort and used to treat patients who haven’t reacted well to traditional treatments
CBD works on seizures through its anti-inflammatory properties. In experimental studies, it often modulates or interacts with pro-inflammatory cytokines, namely key interleukins, as well as the Transient Potential Vanilloid Receptor Type 1 (TRPV1). These receptors and cells are activated, duplicated, and densified during neuro-inflammatory conditions. However, CBD’s presence and binding prevents inflammation, expression, and worsening of bodily responses.
